Prevent Dry, Cakey Foundation: Expert Tips to Prep Your Skin Like A MUA
Are you frustrated with your foundation looking cakey or making your skin feel dry? Even after applying all your favourite base products, does your complexion still appear dull?
Worry not, as in this post, I will share my tips and tricks to banish that dry, cakey base and welcome a gorgeous, glowing canvas perfect for flawless makeup. Let's achieve flawless, glowing skin!
Start with skincare
I cannot stress enough how crucial a good skincare routine is. Your makeup will always look more beautiful on a well-prepped canvas. Therefore, I make it a point to inquire about my clients’ current skincare routine and offer my suggestions or recommendations for skin care specialists when required.
A good cleanser is a must. Personally, I swear by the ZO Skin Health Hydrating Cleanser.
If you don’t double cleanse in the morning and evening, you risk product build-up on your skin, preventing skincare products from being absorbed effectively.
Exfoliating for Butter-like Skin
Exfoliating once or twice a week is a key step to lift dead skin cells and reveal fresh, softer, and glowing skin.
Gently massage your exfoliant in circular motions upwards on your neck and face to boost circulation, promoting brightness and a radiant complexion.
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Using a high quality moisturiser is an essential for beautifully hydrated skin. Some of my favourite products, featured in my professional makeup kit, include the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Base and the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream. These moisturisers provide a perfect base for your foundation to sit beautifully on.
For oily skin, I adore the Laura Mercier Mattifying Oil-Free Moisturizer. This mattifying yet hydrating cream is perfect for balancing oils on oily skin without stripping the skin of moisture.
Setting Spray In-Between Makeup Layers to Add Moisture
Don’t underestimate the power of a setting spray.
Not only will this help lock in products between layers, but it also adds moisture back into the skin, especially in areas where you’ve used powders.
My two firm favourites are the Charlotte Tilbury Setting Spray and the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
Powder is key!
Paying attention to the type of powder you use and where you apply it is crucial. Sometimes, your choice of powder can result in your skin looking dry and cakey.
Being mindful to apply powder only in areas that need it, and opt for a powder such as the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Finish, which has a smoothing blurring effect, for a flawless base.
